Oct. 3 is a big day for the Ice Age Trail! This anniversary marks two exciting accomplishments in Wisconsin history.
On Oct. 3, 1980, President Carter signed the Ice Age National Scenic Trail Act. Today, there are only 11 elite long-distance trails in the United States with this designation.
On this day in 2023, the Ice Age Trail joined the National Trails System, along with the North Country Trail in northern Wisconsin. With their new designation, these beloved trails joined the over 400 other units of the national park system recognized for their important contributions to outdoor recreation.
The Ice Age National Scenic Trail spans over 1,000 miles across Wisconsin and traverses some of the state’s most unique geologic and glacial features. Whether you are embarking on a thousand-mile journey or an afternoon hike, the Ice Age Trail’s iconic yellow blazes are ready to guide your adventure.
