⚡Lightning Safety Awareness Day⚡

Today is Lightning Safety Awareness Day here in Wisconsin!

This time of year, thunderstorms can develop quickly, bringing dangerous lightning to an area.

Do you know what to do if lightning arrives when you’re driving, camping, playing baseball, or in another situation?

Indoors is the SAFEST place you can be during a thunderstorm, though there are a few steps you can take to make it even safer!

– Stay away from windows where damaging wind or hail may be approaching

– Do not have contact with water, lightning can travel through a building’s plumbing

– Do not lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls

– Avoid electronic equipment and use landlines only in an emergency

There is NO safe place outside during a thunderstorm.

If a storm arises while you are away from the safety of a building, you can reduce your risk of being struck by lightning by moving to a more protected area.

Thanks to the Faraday Cage inside your vehicle, most hard-topped vehicles are safe from lightning. If you’re on the road when a storm arrives:

– Pull off to a safe spot

Stay inside your vehicle but do not touch anything metal inside of your car. This includes the radio, cell phone chargers, mobile GPS devices, door handles, and the steering wheel.

– If needed, seek alternative shelter. Convertibles, Jeeps, or other open or soft-topped vehicles do not provide as much protection.
